ONCE WE WERE ISLANDS: Palace of Ash and Rain

ONCE WE WERE ISLANDS sind Aslan und Chris, ein Queeres Performance-Kollektiv. Gemeinsam erschaffen sie seit 2012 multidisziplinäre Aufführungen, die Elemente des Theaters, des Films, der Publikation und der Musik beinhalten und in denen sie oft die Queer konstruierte Sprache Damiá als künstlerisches Werkzeug verwenden. Nach zehn Jahren des Lebens und Arbeitens in Berlin fanden sie 2023 ein neues Zuhause am Rande eines Waldes in Nordkarelien, Finnland. 

Bei JUCKPULVER werden sie “Palace of Ash and Rain” uraufführen, eine brandneue Performance und gleichzeitig fünftes Kapitel ihres ‚Konstellation Kunstwerks‘ oder constellation artwork“With Forests in Our Mouths” (2024/25). „With Forests in our Mouths“ erkundet Queere Utopien und das Potenzial, diese imaginierten Zukünfte ins Leben zu rufen. Das in Zusammenarbeit mit den Licht- und Klangkünstlern* Elliott Cennetoglu, Óscar González und Jean P’ark entstandene Werk “Palace of Ash and Rain” stellt eine Queere Utopie vor, in der jede*r willkommen ist. Es gibt nur eine Bedingung: Du musst alles aus deinem alten Leben zurücklassen. Sogar deine Erinnerungen. Sogar deinen Namen.

“With Forests in Our Mouths“ ist ein mehrteiliges ‚Konstellation Kunstwerk‘, das 2024/25 von der Kone Foundation unterstützt wird und Teil der Metsän puolella Gemeinschaft von Kunst- und Forschungsprojekten ist. “Palace of Ash and Rain“, das fünfte Kapitel der Arbeit, ist eine ONCE WE WERE ISLANDS-Produktion in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Ballhaus Ost und dem Theater neben dem Turm.

ZUGÄNGLICHKEIT: Palace of Ash and Rain zielt darauf ab, einen besser zugänglichen Aufführungsraum sowohl für das Publikum als auch für die Künstler*innen zu schaffen. Die Beleuchtungsstärke für das Publikum wird auf einem Niveau bleiben, das es ermöglicht, sich zu bewegen und den Raum bei Bedarf zu verlassen. Es werden alternative Sitzmöglichkeiten zur Verfügung stehen. Die Türen zum Aufführungsraum werden um 19:30 geöffnet, und das Publikum ist herzlich eingeladen, sich bis zum Beginn der Aufführung um 20:00 zu uns zu gesellen, um sich zu entspannen und es sich bequem zu machen, der Musik zu lauschen oder Fragen zu stellen.

EN: ONCE WE WERE ISLANDS are Aslan and Chris, a Queer performance collective. Together, they have been making multidisciplinary performance work — including elements of theatre, film, publication, and music, and often using the Queer constructed language Damiá as an artistic tool — since 2012. In 2023, after a decade living and making work in Berlin, they found a new home at the edge of the forest in North Karelia, Finland. At JUCKPULVER they will premiere Palace of Ash and Rain, a brand new performance work and the fifth chapter of their constellation artwork With Forests in Our Mouths (2024/25) in which they explore Queer Utopias and the potential for speaking these imagined futures into being. Made in collaboration with light and sound artists Elliott Cennetoglu, Óscar González and Jean P’ark, Palace of Ash and Rain imagines a Queer Utopia where everyone is welcome. There is just one condition: you must leave everything of your old life behind. Even your memories. Even your name.

With Forests in Our Mouths is a multi-chapter constellation artwork supported in 2024/25 by the Kone Foundation, and part of the Metsän puolella community of arts and research projects. Palace of Ash and Rain, the fifth chapter of the work, is a ONCE WE WERE ISLANDS production in cooperation with Ballhaus Ost and Theater neben dem Turm.

ACCESSIBILITY: Palace of Ash and Rain aims to create a more accessible performance space for both audience and performers. Audience lighting levels will remain at a level where it is possible to move around and to leave the space if necessary. Alternative seating options will be available. The doors to the performance space will open at 19:30 and audiences are welcome to come and join us there to relax and get comfortable, listen to music, or ask questions until the performance begins at 20:00.

Roger Robinson + Disrupt

Roger Robinson und Disrupt kehren mit lyrischen Geschichten zur Live-Show zurück und erzählen vom Überleben in urbanen Landschaften. Diese Geschichten, vorgetragen in Robinsons weitem Vokal-Spektrum zwischen bebender Dub-Poesie und eindringlichem Falsettgesang, versuchen, das unsichtbare Leben sichtbar zu machen: Sie geben Menschen, die von Gentrifizierung, Rassismus, Arbeitslosigkeit und Niedriglohnarbeit betroffen sind, ein Gefühl von Autorität und ästhetischer Erhabenheit. In der Show wird jedes Lied zu einer Geschichte in der Stadt, während die Show selbst wie eine Stadt ist, die all diese Geschichten enthält. Klanglich wird das Ganze auf Riddim-Cuts aus den Schatztruhen des Jahtari Netlabels gespielt, von bearbeiteten Klassikern bis hin zu völlig neuen Experimenten, alles liebevoll live synchronisiert und von analoger Charakteristik durchdrungen. 

Roger Robinson ist Sänger und Texter von King Midas Sound und hat Soloalben u.a. mit Jahtari Records aufgenommen. Als Schriftsteller und Gewinner des T.S. Eliot Prize 2019 und des RSL Ondaatje Prize 2020  tritt er weltweit auf. Seine jüngste Sammlung “A Portable Paradise” wurde 2019 von New Statesman zum Buch des Jahres ernannt.

Vor dem Hintergrund von Breakcore, Weirdo-Electronic und einer Liebe für Soundtracks von Videospielen begab sich Disrupt, Gründer von Jahtari Records, im Jahr 2003 mit einem rumpeligen Laptop auf die bis heute anhaltende Mission, Bits und Bytes mit den Qualitäten von Dub Musik zu vereinen.

EN: In this collaboration Roger Robinson and Disrupt return to their live show with a reel full of new tales about survivals in the urban landscape. These stories, delivered in Robinson’s full vocal spectrum between low-end dub poetry tremors and haunting falsetto singing, are trying to make the invisible lives visible: giving people affected by gentrification, racism, unemployment and low wage work a sense of authority and aesthetic nobility. In the show each song becomes a story in the city, while the show is like a city holding these stories. All performed on riddim cuts from the Jahtari vaults, from re-edited classics to completely new experiments, all lovingly dubbed live and soaked in analogue goodness.

Roger Robinson: Roger Robinson is the lead vocalist and lyricist for King Midas Sound and has also recorded solo albums with Jahtari Records. He is a writer who has performed worldwide, an experienced workshop leader and winner of the T.S. Eliot Prize 2019 and RSL Ondaatje Prize 2020. His latest collection ‚A Portable Paradise‘ was a Newstatesman book of the year. 

Disrupt: With a background in breakcore, weirdo electronic music and a love for video game soundtracks disrupt and a trashy laptop set out on a mission to unite bits and bytes with the goodness of DUB back in 2003. Starting the Jahtari imprint as an outlet for those humble but fun experiments helped to gain momentum for the sound and DIY approach the label is now known for. A fair heap of releases followed since 2007: „Foundation Bit“ (on Werk Discs), „The Bass Has Left The Bilding“ (LP), „Dot Matrix With Stereo Sound“ and many ruffneck dancehall EPs and 7″s alongside Maffi and Naram. Disrupt also produced the cosmic enka LP „Karma No Kusari“ by Kiki Hitomi, and the dub poetry epics „Dis Side Ah Town“ and „Dog Heart City“ by Roger Robinson. With the trilogy of cosmic library albums „Omega Station„, „The Recreation Room“ and „Under Triple Suns“ disrupt ventures out deeply into the unexplored space between dub and sonic fiction.
